My Day

You know this morning,
when I woke before the dawn -
and my head
was crowded
with that infernal,
never-ending list of things to do?
I closed my eyes in worry,
and that is when
you said hello…
- I liked that part especially.

You know this afternoon
when we walked among the trees
and you took my hand
in yours -
and showed me how you blend the light
into the shadows
just to make them dance?
For just a moment I saw
how your brain works -
and I liked that part especially.

You know that
when we stood there in those trees,
on that dappled,
dancing path -
all wrapped up in quiet?
It was like I had my nose
buried in your collar…
I could smell the wild, fresh
scent of your cologne and,
well, I liked that part,
especially.

And you know how later,
when we sat beneath the stars,
Surrounded by friends
and flickers of firelight?
You looked up,
amongst the murmurs and silly jokes.
And I knew you knew
how many stars there were -
but under that vast sky,
it was me your arm held tight.
I think I loved that part especially.

You know that place we visit
from time to time?
The one inside me
- the one without a name -
You told me once
it exists outside of time
and space…
because there is no end to you
or me.
It’s my favourite,
secret,
hiding spot.
Where you are always waiting -
and I am always coming home.
I love that place.
Especially.
